This month we’ll be looking at all things avian from the californian condorcritically endangered, to the species we were too late to save.

Despite conservation efforts, things are getting worse with an 80% decline in the population; with one in eight species under threat; many of which are critically endangered and on the brink of extinction.

Although there are a number of threats to the birds, the most common is the human population; with natural habitats being turned into farmland, and birds being hunted or trapped for food and their eggs. Other major threats include logging, urbanisation, pollution and fisheries. Climate change is also becoming an increasingly significant floggingactor.

Apart from human threats, invasive alien species are also responsible for a 65% decline in bird populations, especially species living on islands.

It’s not all doom and gloom though, thanks to conservation efforts many species have been brought back from the brink. A recent study showed that 33 species have been protected from extinction. The main way this has been done is through raising public awareness, along with providing supplemented food and translocation of birds.

We’re hoping to raise awareness with weekly profiles of bird watchingendangered species, and tributes to those species we were unable to help. We’ll also be letting you know where the best places for bird watching are in the UK and abroad, along with some helpful photography tips to ensure you capture the beauty of these animals.
